The Catholic University of Malawi’s St. Thomas More Campus in Nanjiri, Lilongwe, has officially begun the second semester of the 2026 academic year with a General Assembly bringing together University management, staff and students. The assembly provided an opportunity for the University community to reflect on the semester ahead, reinforce expectations around academic and personal conduct, and discuss some of the opportunities and challenges emerging as the newly established campus continues to grow. Addressing the students, Vice Chancellor Professor Francis Moto encouraged them to approach the new semester with renewed commitment to their studies while upholding the values and standards expected of members of the CUNIMA community. Professor Moto particularly emphasised the importance of academic integrity, urging students to remain honest and responsible in their academic work. He also called on them to conduct themselves with politeness, respect and discipline, both within and outside the University. He reminded students that academic success goes beyond classroom performance, noting the importance of character, responsibility and positive relationships in shaping well-rounded graduates. Students Raise Key Concerns The General Assembly also provided a platform for students to directly engage University leadership and raise issues affecting their academic and campus experience. As enrolment and activities at St. Thomas More Campus continue to expand, students highlighted a number of challenges requiring attention. One of the key requests raised was the provision of a University bus to help address transportation challenges faced by students travelling to and from the campus. The students noted that reliable transportation would help ease some of the difficulties associated with commuting and contribute to a more convenient and supportive learning environment. The engagement gave University leadership an opportunity to hear directly from students and provided a forum for dialogue on how some of the emerging challenges can be addressed as the campus develops. A Campus on the Rise The General Assembly comes at an important stage in the development of St. Thomas More Campus, which continues to expand its role in providing higher education opportunities in Lilongwe and surrounding areas. The campus was inaugurated on 6 March 2026 and forms part of CUNIMA’s continued expansion as the University seeks to make quality and holistic higher education more accessible to students. The growth of the campus has also brought new opportunities for interaction among students, staff and University leadership, with forums such as the General Assembly providing an important avenue for communication and community building. As the second semester gets underway, students have been encouraged to remain focused on their academic goals, make responsible use of the opportunities available to them and contribute positively to the development of the campus. The University, meanwhile, continues to engage with the CUNIMA community on issues affecting teaching, learning, student welfare and the overall campus experience. With renewed focus and collaboration between management, staff and students, St. Thomas More Campus begins the second semester with a shared commitment to academic excellence, discipline, integrity and holistic formation.
