The Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) and the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) have reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating in efforts to improve the quality of higher education in the country. The commitment was expressed during the second consultative meeting between the two institutions’ management teams held on Friday, where they discussed potential areas of cooperation to strengthen academic excellence, research and knowledge sharing. Speaking during the meeting, RBM Training Institute Manager, Dr. Charming Nakweya, said the central bank was committed to working with CUNIMA to advance initiatives that would benefit both institutions. “We are really committed as a central bank in this country to work together with the University, and we want this to be done,” said Dr. Nakweya. On behalf of CUNIMA, the Director of Academics and Quality Assurance, Rev. Fr. Dr. Wilfred Sumani, SJ, commended RBM for its commitment towards making the proposed partnership a reality. Fr. Dr. Sumani observed that while many institutions express interest in partnerships, their success depends on the willingness of the parties involved to translate discussions into concrete action. “Many partners do come forth expressing willingness to work together, but very few are committed to what has been discussed. Many disappear after camera clicks, and it ends there,” he said. The proposed collaboration will focus on several areas, including academic programme development, curriculum design, teaching, guest lecturing, knowledge sharing and research collaboration. Through these initiatives, the two institutions seek to create opportunities for sharing expertise, strengthening academic programmes and connecting classroom learning with practical professional experience. The engagement reflects the importance of collaboration between higher education institutions and professional organisations in equipping students with relevant knowledge and skills while supporting research and national development. As discussions continue, both institutions are expected to explore ways of translating the proposed areas of cooperation into practical initiatives that will benefit their respective communities and contribute to the advancement of higher education in Malawi.
