The Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Catholic Church’s mission of transforming communities through education by donating a newly constructed classroom block to St. Mary’s Primary School at Nzama in Ntcheu District.
The handover took place on Saturday as the Catholic Church in Malawi commemorated its 125th Anniversary, marking a significant milestone in the Church’s history and its contribution to the social and educational development of the country.
Constructed at a cost of USD, 9,229,042.80 (MK180 million,) the new classroom block comprises four classrooms and is expected to provide a safer, more conducive and supportive learning environment for pupils at the rural school.
The facility is part of CUNIMA’s broader commitment to extending the impact of education beyond the university environment and contributing to the development of communities, particularly those in rural areas.
Speaking during the celebration, the Special Envoy of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for the 125th Anniversary celebrations, His Excellency Most Reverend Monsignor Fortunatus Nwachukwu, commended CUNIMA for the gesture, describing the initiative as a meaningful expression of the Church’s commitment to serving communities.
In his prayer, Monsignor Nwachukwu also encouraged the University to remain faithful to its mission of providing quality and holistic education, while continuing to reach out to communities and contribute to the development of the country.
The classroom block comes at a time when access to adequate learning infrastructure remains an important part of improving the quality of education, particularly in rural communities where schools can face challenges related to classroom space and other learning facilities.
For CUNIMA, the donation goes beyond the construction of a physical structure. It represents the University's belief that education is a powerful tool for human development, empowerment and social transformation.
The initiative also reflects the shared commitment of the Catholic Church and CUNIMA to promoting quality, accessible and holistic education as a foundation for building stronger individuals, families and communities across Malawi.
As the Church celebrates 125 years of its presence in Malawi, the classroom block at Nzama stands as a tangible expression of a legacy built not only through faith and evangelisation, but also through education, service and investment in the future of the country’s children.
