The Chancellor of the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA), Rt. Rev. Dr. Martin Anwel Mtumbuka, has urged the 2026 graduates to prepare themselves for both the challenges and successes that life presents.
Delivering his homily during the 25th Congregation Mass held on Thursday at the university campus, Bishop Mtumbuka reminded the graduates that life beyond university comes with both opportunities and difficulties, and encouraged them to remain steadfast in all circumstances.
“That is why we are commending you to God, so that He should continue being with you as you leave this place. While you were here, you were guided by the curriculum, but now we do not know what lies ahead of you. Life has both challenges and successes, and we must be prepared for both,” said the Chancellor.
Bishop Mtumbuka further encouraged the graduates to become agents of positive change in the country.
“Our sons and daughters should not go out there and join the many thieves who are stealing from the poorest people in this country. Be the change that we all want to see,” he added.
He also advised the fresh graduates to desist from committing suicide, stressing that life is precious and that challenges should never drive anyone to take their own life.
Concurring with Bishop Mtumbuka, the Chairperson of the University Council, Most Rev. Thomas Luke Msusa, said the university will continue producing graduates who are competitive on the job market.
The 25th Congregation of CUNIMA is being held under the theme, “Put out into the deep” (Luke 5:4), with a total of 1,704 students graduating with degrees, diplomas, and certificates from the university’s seven faculties.
